Windwood’s BLACK GOLD Planting Mix

Why it stands out: This is our bestselling product turning beginners into experts every day. Trusted by gardeners for over 30 years. Carefully tested yearly and balanced to a pH of 7.2, this nutrient-rich mix provides a weed free start for up to six months. Produced locally in Ringgold, Georgia by us. It’s been used by Rock City Gardens, the Chattanooga Rose Society, the City of Chattanooga, Erlanger Hospital, Coolidge Park, and many more local businesses.
Our compost is created using an aerobic process, meaning it’s regularly turned to introduce oxygen. This produces richer nutrients while preventing methane production, reducing environmental impact. Each batch is sifted through a ½-inch screen for a smooth, consistent texture that’s easy to work with.
Because of its rich, dark color, this mix may dry faster in direct sunlight. Mulching after planting is recommended to retain moisture and create a clean, finished look. We also recommend wetting the soil before use since it is a compost.
What’s inside: A carefully balanced blend of composted leaves, wood chips, sawdust, mushroom compost, chicken litter, screened topsoil, pine bark fines, and wheat straw.
Best For:
• Raised garden beds
• Vegetable gardens
• Annual and perennial flowers
• Shrub and tree plantings
• Pots and containers (with proper drainage beneath)
Dry weight: 1,000 lbs. per cubic yard
Bulk planting mix does not contain worm castings it needs to be purchased separately

Mushroom Compost

Facts: A rich amendment ideal for preparing new planting areas. Because it is high in organic matter and nutrients, it’s best worked into bare soil several weeks before planting so it can mellow and integrate with your existing soil structure. This helps improve water retention and nutrients without overwhelming young roots or newly planted seedlings. It’s slightly alkaline, just be mindful of sensitive or acid loving plants when applying. Has a PH between 6.5-8
What’s inside: A nutrient rich byproduct of mushroom cultivation, created from a balanced mix of composted brown and green material that provides organic matter and slow-release nutrients to the soil.
Best for:
• Enhancing soil structure and water absorption before planting
• Helping reduce soil erosion and insulate roots once incorporated
• Improving nutrient content when mixed into soil
Dry Weight: 1,000 lbs. per cubic yard
Smooth & Green

Facts: Originally developed for golf courses to achieve that smooth dark green finish and level surface area. It also adds nutrients to improve overall turf health. This easy-to-apply mix should be spread 1 to 2 inches deep or lightly applied over shorter grass while allowing blades to show through. Multiple applications may be needed to reach your desired level surface. With no rocks and a finely blended texture, it spreads evenly and works quickly to enhance drainage while helping retain moisture.
What’s inside: A balanced blend of 70% sand and 30% Compost, providing trace minerals, organic matter, and structure for healthy lawn growth.
Best for:
• Achieving a smooth, golf course quality lawn finish

Fill Dirt

Facts:
A dense, structural material used for building up, leveling, and stabilizing areas where plants will not be grown. This hard-packed soil has low fertility and poor drainage, making it ideal for foundational work rather than gardening. It contains natural rock pieces and varies in color from burnt orange to light tan. This product is best suited for large voids, grading, and land shaping where strength and compaction matter more than nutrients.
What it’s made of:
A natural blend of chert a hard fine grained sedimentary rock made primarily of microcrystalline quartz and orange clay, creating a compactable material with structural integrity. May contain large rocks.
Uses:
• Filling large holes deeper than 12 inches
• Grading driveways (compact first, then apply gravel on top)
• Raising or leveling land where plants won’t be grown
• Construction or landscaping projects requiring a firm, stable base
Not ideal for planting
Dry Weight: 2,200 lbs. per cubic yard
Masonry Sand

Facts:
A finely ground material commonly used in masonry and hardscape applications. Made from crushed sandstone, it provides a smooth, workable base for mortar, pavers, brick, and block projects. While it can be used in certain landscape applications, it’s important to be mindful of how it may affect soil structure and ensure it’s appropriate for your specific garden or planting needs.
What it’s made of:
Finely ground sandstone, screened for consistency and easy handling.
Uses:
• Mortar, pavers, brick, and block work
• Swimming pool base
• Weed prevention between pavers or stone
• Creating a base beneath above ground pools
Dry Weight: 3,000 lbs. per cubic yard
