Windwood’s Planting Mix – Black Gold

Facts: Windwood’s Premium Planting Mix Compost is an all-natural, nutrient rich soil blend that has been trusted by gardeners for over 30 years. Each batch is carefully tested to ensure quality, with a balanced pH of 7.2 confirmed annually. Our mix stays weed-free for approximately six months, providing a low-maintenance start for any planting project.
We use an aerobic composting process, which means the pile is regularly turned to introduce oxygen. This method not only results in a richer, more nutrient rich compost but also prevents the production of methane—a harmful greenhouse gas—helping to reduce our environmental impact. The composting schedule we follow is guided by recommendations from the University of Georgia, ensuring our product is both effective and eco-conscious.
Produced locally in Ringgold, Georgia, our mix is the top choice for both homeowners and professionals across the region. It’s been used by Rock City Gardens on Lookout Mountain, the Chattanooga Rose Society, the City of Collegedale, and Erlanger Hospital. Each batch is finely sifted through a half-inch screen to create a smooth, consistent texture that’s easy to work with.
For best results in raised beds, we recommend placing sticks or cardboard underneath the soil to encourage natural drainage and help prevent weeds.
This mix is rich in nutrients, we also advise using a catch tray, as it may cause staining on patios or driveways.
Because of its rich, dark color, our planting mix can absorb a good bit of sunlight, which means it may dry out faster than lighter soils. To help retain moisture and prevent the soil from shifting or washing away, we recommend mulching over it after planting. Mulch not only helps lock in water and keep temperatures stable, but also gives your garden a clean, finished look.
What it’s made of: This mix is made from a carefully blended combination of leaves, wood chips, sawdust, mushroom compost, chicken litter, screened topsoil, pine bark fines, and wheat straw.
Uses:
- Raised garden beds
- Vegetable gardens

Mushroom Compost

Facts: For best results, we recommend adding mushroom compost to empty, plant-free garden beds several weeks before planting. The ideal time to apply is in late winter to early spring. Because mushroom compost is very nutrient-rich—and often referred to as “hot”—it needs time to break down and mellow before plants are introduced. To prevent root burn or plant damage, be sure to till it into the soil and allow it to sit for 2 to 4 weeks before planting.
Slightly acidic to mildly alkaline.
Has a PH between 6.5-8
It will break mulch down faster
What it’s made of: Byproduct of growing mushrooms. 4 parts brown material 1 part green. It’s the compost used in the mushroom making process but they can only use it once so we get the nutrient rich by product.

- Adding more organic matter and nutrients to old/established gardens
- Insulate roots from extreme temperatures
- Prevent soil erosion
Dry Weight: 1,000 lbs per cubic yard
